A Simple Guide to Getting Your Squarespace Website on Google
You’ve launched your Squarespace website (or you’re close), and now you’re wondering…How do I actually get people to find it? More specifically, how do I get my website to show up on Google?
The good news: Squarespace is already built with SEO in mind. You don’t need a background in tech or marketing to get started. With a few intentional steps, you can help Google understand who you are, what you do, and who your work is for.
Here are our seven steps on how to begin.
Set your site to “public” (so Google can find it)
Before anything else, make sure your site is not in private or maintenance mode.
In Squarespace:
Go to Settings → Site Availability
Make sure it’s set to Public
If your site is still under construction, you can leave it private until you're ready. But once you want Google (and people) to find it, this is step one.
Submit your site to Google Search Console
Google will eventually crawl your site on its own, but you can help it along by submitting your sitemap directly.
Here’s how:
Visit Google Search Console
Sign in with your Google account
Add your domain (yourwebsite.com)
Follow the steps to verify ownership (Squarespace gives you a meta tag for this)
Once verified, submit your sitemap:
→ It’s usually atyourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
This tells Google, “Hey, this site is real, and here’s what’s on it.”
Use keywords your audience is actually searching for
SEO isn’t about tricking the algorithm—it’s about clarity.
Your homepage, page titles, headlines, and descriptions should reflect how real people talk about what they’re looking for.
For wellness providers, that might be:
“Online therapy for anxiety”
“Prenatal yoga classes in Asheville”
For nonprofits, it might be:
“Free food pantry in Milwaukee”
“After-school programs for teens”
Include these phrases naturally in your website copy especially on your homepage, About page, and any service or program pages.
Fill in your SEO titles and descriptions in Squarespace
Each page on your site has fields where you can customize what Google shows in search results. Don’t skip these!
In Squarespace:
Go to Pages → Settings → SEO
Write a title that clearly describes the page (Example: “Affordable Counseling for Women in Denver | Bright Path Therapy”)
Write a description that shares who you help and how
Think of this as your first impression in a search result. Clarity wins over cleverness.
Add alt text to your images
Alt text helps with accessibility and tells search engines what’s in your images.
In Squarespace:
Click on an image → Settings → add a short, clear alt description
Examples:
“Occupational therapist working with child in classroom”
“Community volunteers packing food boxes”
These descriptions add valuable context and help your content show up in image searches too.
Get listed in local directories
If you serve a specific area, make sure your organization or business is listed in Google Business Profile and local directories. This helps with local search especially when people search phrases like “near me.”
You can create or claim your listing here: Google Business Profile
Be patient and keep showing up
SEO takes time. You might not see your site pop up overnight, and that’s normal. What matters most is that you’ve created something clear, helpful, and built to last.
Even a few blog posts, testimonials, or updates over time can help Google see that your site is alive and active and worth sharing.
